Facing My First DNF

January 2024 marked a pivotal moment in my ultra running journey. As I set out to tackle the Arc of Attrition 50, I was filled with excitement and determination. However, just 17.5 miles into the race, a painful knee issue forced me to make the toughest decision of my running career – to pull out. It was my first ever DNF (Did Not Finish), and the disappointment was overwhelming. But in that moment of defeat, I realised that this setback was an opportunity for growth. The Arc of Attrition had lived up to its name, testing not just my physical limits but my mental resilience as well. As I limped away from the course, I knew that my journey wasn’t over – it was just taking an unexpected detour. This experience would become the catalyst for a year of transformation, pushing me to reassess my approach to ultra running recovery and endurance training.

Embracing Physio and Patience

The path to recovery was not a sprint but a marathon in itself. I committed to a rigorous physiotherapy regimen, working closely with experts to address the root causes of my knee issue. This process taught me the importance of patience in ultra running recovery. I had to resist the urge to rush back into training, understanding that true healing takes time. Recovery became a non negotiable part of my routine, with dedicated time for stretching, (occasional) foam rolling, and sleep. Perhaps most importantly, it gave me the tools to analyze and improve my own performance while also helping others achieve their ultra marathon goals. This experience not only made me a better runner but also allowed me to give back to the ultra running community by sharing evidence-based knowledge and practical tips. Earning this certification was a pivotal step in my journey from setback to success.

Nutrition and Race Strategy Insights

I also focused on mental preparation, using visualisation techniques and mindfulness practices to build mental resilience for those tough moments in races. Another key aspect was mastering the art of efficient aid station visits and on-the-go gear adjustments. These skills proved crucial during the Arc of Attrition, allowing me to maintain momentum throughout the race. Additionally, I fine tuned my recovery strategies, understanding that proper rest and rehabilitation between training sessions were just as important as the runs themselves. This holistic approach to training for long distances not only improved my physical performance but also enhanced my overall enjoyment of ultra running.

Pacing Through the Cornish Coastline

January 2025 saw me back at the start line of the Arc of Attrition 50, armed with newfound knowledge and determination. The brutal beauty of the Cornish coastline stretched before me, a challenge I was now prepared to face. I started steady, mindful of the journey ahead. The route from the Minack Theatre to Porthtowan was a rollercoaster of steep climbs and technical descents, demanding constant focus and adaptability. I carefully managed my pace, knowing that each mile would test my endurance. The relentless terrain that had once defeated me now became a playground for applying my improved race strategy. I found myself navigating the coastal paths with greater confidence, fueling efficiently, and maintaining a sustainable rhythm. The breathtaking views served as both motivation and reward, reminding me of the privilege of running in such a stunning environment.

The Power of Community Support

Throughout the Arc of Attrition 50, I was continually amazed by the incredible support from the ultra running community. The aid stations became havens of encouragement, staffed by tireless volunteers who seemed to anticipate every runner’s needs. Their cheers and words of motivation provided crucial mental boosts during challenging moments. Fellow runners on the course offered camaraderie and shared determination, creating a sense of collective perseverance. I was particularly inspired by my Trail-Run Explorers ambassadors, @janerunstrails who conquered the 50k, and @jadesveganlife who tackled the daunting 100-mile race despite a broken hand. Their resilience epitomised the spirit of ultra running. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of community in achieving ultra marathon success. It wasn’t just about individual achievement; it was about being part of something larger, a community that lifts each other up and celebrates every finish line crossed.

Crossing the finish line of the Arc of Attrition 50 in around 13 hours was a moment of pure elation. While it wasn’t my fastest race, the significance of this achievement far outweighed any time considerations. This was about redemption, resilience, and the culmination of a year’s worth of dedicated recovery and training. The finish line became a place of reflection, where I could appreciate the journey that led me back to this point. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the lessons learned and the growth experienced. This success was not just personal; it was a celebration of the ultra running community’s spirit. From the volunteers to fellow runners, everyone played a part in this accomplishment. The Arc of Attrition lived up to its reputation as a formidable challenge, and completing it felt like a major milestone in my ultra running journey, setting the stage for future adventures.
